Chapter 10

Later that evening, his wrist bandaged, Asher poked around the kitchen in search of dinner. He found himself with the predicament of craving something but being unable to put his fingers on exactly what. For the umpteenth time, he opened the fridge, as if new food might have magically appeared since his last check. He was about to give in and just order pizza when there came a knock at the door. Thinking it likely to be Bowie coming around to check up on him, Asher prepared a joke as he yanked open the front door.

His words fell flat on the burst of cold air that swept in.

“Hi,” Clara greeted, sheepish. Was the redness of her cheeks courtesy of the nip in the air or because of what Bowie had said about attraction? She held up the bag clutched in one hand. “I heard about your accident and thought you might need someone to take pity on you.”

The name of the local diner was splashed across the bag and he could already smell the burgers within. Asher stepped aside to let her in.

“Mighty kind of you to think of me,” he said.

Standing in the foyer with the heavenly aroma of chargrilled meat, Clara was quickly surrounded by his dogs. He tried to shush them away, failing. She laughed and the sound was like music to his ears. His heart fluttered, Bowie’s words once again bouncing through his mind.

“Might as well get this into the kitchen,” she said.

They passed into the kitchen, Asher happy for once he obsessed about keeping it neat and clean. Clara set the bag on the counter while he fetched plates. He was trying to think of something to say, then realized there was no need. As they quietly transferred burgers and fries from cardboard cartons to plates, Asher marveled at how comfortable he found their silence. With other women, there was constant chatter or a lot of touching taking place. He wouldn’t go so far as to call himself a cowboy Casanova like Bowie was, but although he had a way with the ladies, there wasn’t a seemingly endless list of one night stands in his past.

Fishing sodas out of the fridge, he wondered what it was about Clara that brought forth a wave of nervousness.

Did that mean she was special? Could he be falling in love?

Maybe it was time to stop by and see his sister, get an opinion other than Bowie’s, a little female insight. Then again, did he really want her to know about the whole thing? She might take it upon herself to play matchmaker in an effort to help him find happiness. After his last failed attempt in the wide world of dating, his dear sweet sister had tried to find him a more suitable lady, someone who could manage a rancher and everything that came with him. Unfortunately, he never clicked with any of them and to hear it from them he spent too much time working.

Clara, with her own booming business, would certainly fit the bill.
